Soundtrack to February

A day later than promised, but here is my Soundtrack to February. This is a selection of some of the songs I listened to most last month, in no particular order. Hoping to give an insight into my musical tastes. Enjoy!

1:
Artist: Nirvana
Song: In Bloom
Album: Nevermind
Sample Lyrics:

He's the one who likes all our pretty songs
And he likes to sing along and he likes to shoot his gun.
But he knows not what it means
Knows not what it means and I say, yeah.

2:

Artist: Nirvana
Song: Come As You Are
Album: Nevermind
Sample Lyrics:

Come as you are, as you were, as I want you to be.
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy.

3:
Song: Joe Rey
Album: Fountains of Wayne
Sample Lyrics:

Joe Rey came from Spain
Across the ocean in the frozen rain
And he loves
Point point pointing the finger.

Favourite Lyrics:

Joe Rey is not so pretty
I can't understand why he's so in demand
He stays out late in the city, sometimes, sometimes.

4:

Artist: Rammstein
Song: Sonne
Album: Mutter

5:

Artist: Fountains of Wayne
Song: Sick Day
Album: Fountains of Wayne
Opening Lyrics:

Check out the girl in the Harbor Tunnel
Crawling to work six feet under
And the day has barely begun

Favourite Lyrics:

And here is the man pushing paper past her
Thinks up ways to make the day go faster
But the day goes on and on

6:

Artist: Noel Gallagher
Song: Dream On
Album: High Flying Birds

7:
Artist: Jimmy Eat World
Album: Bleed American
Sample Lyrics:

Salt, sweat, sugar on the asphalt
Our hearts littering the topsoil
Tune in and we can get the last call
Our lives, our coal

8:
Song: In my Head
Album: Lullabies to Paralyze
Sample Lyrics:

I keep on playing our favourite song
I turn it up while you're gone
It's all I got when you're in my head and you're in my head so I need it.

When the wheels come down - A Musical Tuesday

A bit late with the musical Tuesday, and almost missed it for a couple of reasons. The second reason was because I have been watching a programme about a teenage boy with Aspergers. It upset me in parts as it made me think lots about what life must be like for my number 3 nephew who also has Aspergers. Saving that for another day (maybe), I'll explain the first reason - I almost had no song to talk about. That's right, a 25 minute journey home plus a trip to Tesco, over 1000 songs on the iPod, yet I must have flicked through at least 100 before I found something I really wanted to listen to tonight. It's funny how I like every single (almost) song on my iPod yet I have to be in the right mood to listen to most of them.

Tonight's song that made me smile & made me sing along all the way home from Tesco was Foo Fighters - Wheels. Apart from this being a great song with lovely lyrics, this song reminds me of a lovely moment when we went to see them at Milton Keynes earlier this year.

About half way through the evening, Dave Grohl ran up the walkway, past where we were standing and round to face those not lucky enough to be able to see the main stage. Here he sat with his guitar and sang a couple of songs. One of them was Wheels, and as a lot of the inner circle ran to the back to get a better view, we stayed put. With our arms around each other we swayed and sang to the whole song. Sounds cheesy, but at one moment it felt like it was just me, my husband and Dave Grohl there.

Foo Fighters-Wheels

I know what you're thinkin'We were goin' downI can feel the sinkin'But then I came around

And everyone I've loved beforeFlashed before my eyesAnd nothin' mattered anymoreI looked into the sky

Well I wanted something better manI wished for something newAnd I wanted something beautifulAnd wish for something trueBeen lookin' for a reason manSomething to lose

When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)And you feel like it's all overThere's another round for youWhen the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)

Know your head is spinnin'Broken hearts will mendThis is our beginningComin to an end

Well, you wanted something better manYou wished for something newWell, you wanted something beautifulWished for something trueBeen lookin for a reason manSomething to lose

When the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)When the wheels touch ground (When the wheels touch ground)And you feel like it's all overThere's another round for youWhen the wheels come down (When the wheels come down)

Something - A Musical Tuesday

I've been a bad blogger lately with the few posts being short and lacking words. It's not that I don't want to blog, it's just that I rarely have anything interesting to say. With this in mind I started thinking about topics I could make into a regular feature. One that kept popping up was music that I listen to on the way home from work, and so I have decided to make Tuesdays into Musical Tuesdays. I can't promise they'll be extremely interesting, but I plan to pick a song each week from something I've heard on the radio or my iPod on the way home from work. Whichever one stands out the most, whether it's for the lyrics, the way it makes me feel, or the memories it unearths, I shall attempt to write a post about it.

The first Musical Tuesday will be about Something, a song by The Beatles.

Tonight, hearing this song actually made me feel extremely emotional, and even brought a tear to my eye. The reason for this is because of the memories this song brings. It was the song we chose to have our first dance to at our wedding last year, so hearing brought back many happy memories.
I promise that the next Musical Tuesday will have a bit more of a story, but for now I leave you with the lyrics, a video and a wedding photo.

Something in the way she moves,
Attracts me like no other lover.
Something in the way she woos me.
I don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe and how.

Somewhere in her smile she knows,
That I don't need no other lover.
Something in her style that shows me.
I don't want to leave her now,
You know I believe and how.

You're asking me will my love grow,
I don't know, I don't know.
Stick around, and it may show,
But I don't know, I don't know.

Something in the way she knows,
And all I have to do is think of her.
Something in the things she shows me.
I don't want to leave her now.
You know I believe and how.

However, I've still lost weight and inches, and for the first time in 2 years, the scales have read less than 10 stone. Not sure they still will after my naughty steak and chips tonight though, so I need to punish myself by working extra hard at the gym tomorrow morning.

Music to Gym to - Playlist 1

Since starting my diet I have also started going to the gym again. A few people have asked 'Don't you find it boring?' Well the answer is 'No'! Well I probably would if I didn't have my iPod with me. The secret to a good gym workout is a good playlist, filled with songs that have just the right beat to workout to. I have about 6 gym playlists on my iPod now, each one carefully planned out carefully to fit to my hour long workout.

Playlist no.1

My routine at the gym starts with a 5 minute warm-up on the bike, and kicking it all off with 'Survival Car' from their debut album, is Fountains of Wayne

My bike warm-up continues with Weezer, and 'No-one Else' from The Blue Album

Next, it's time for 10 minutes on the Cross Trainer. This is where things start to speed up a little, and I need music that will help me keep the pace, especially for the last few minutes.

Foo Fighters - Back & Forth
System Of A Down - Chop Suey - This is the one that helps me get through the last few breathless minutes.

Next up is the stepper, 10 minutes of burning in the backs of my legs, starting with Biffy Clyro - Shock Shock

My time on the treadmill varies between 10 and 20 minutes depending on how tired I'm feeling. This is probably where the music gets a bit heavier

Alter Bridge - Rise Today

After this, I do a few weights, some sit ups, generally slower paced, cooling down exercises. This part of the playlist features a mixture of Fountains of Wayne and some slower Foo Fighters tracks, including Wheels.
